Singapore Patent Steps & Timeline
PCT National Phase Timeline


This sets out the progress of a typical application and should be taken as a guide only. Always contact us for advice relevant to your specific situation.

STEP 1:Priority Date
File priority application

STEP 2: Within 12 months of Step 1
File PCT application

STEP 3: Within 30 months of Step 1 (or Step 2 if no priority claimed)*
File Singapore national phase application

In view of the changes that came into effect on 1 August 2006, we recommend requesting a "block extension" shortly after filing, which extends the deadlines for requesting examination and grant by 18 months. The following timelines show the block extended deadlines.

STEP 4: Within 39 months of Step 1 (or Step 2 if no priority is claimed)
Request local examination, together with a local search or based on a foreign search report from a prescribed corresponding application.

Please note that local examination need not be requested if the applicant wishes to rely on a positive IPRP or acceptance of a prescribed corresponding application by the deadline for paying grant fees (see step 5).

STEP 5: Within 60 months of Step 1 (or Step 2 if no priority is claimed)*
Pay Grant fee and indicate whether reliance is placed on a local examination report, IPRP, or acceptance of a prescribed corresponding application.

STEP 6:
Patent Grant Certificate issues

STEP 7: 4 years from Step 2*
Pay first annual Renewal Fee

STEP 8: One year from Step 7 and annually thereafter*
Pay annual Renewal Fee to maintain the patent

STEP 9: 20 years from Step 2
Expiry of patent
