Singapore Patent Filing Requirements
Convention and Non-Convention Applications

Minimum Requirements for Obtaining a Filing Date
(Convention applications must be filed within 12 months of the earliest priority date - extendible in some circumstances)

  • Applicant's name, address, nationality and State of incorporation (for US applicant companies only)
  • Informal description of the invention (in any language)
  • Informal drawings (if any)
  • If priority claimed, date and country of filing of priority application
  • For inventions relating to biological material, indication that a deposit has been made with an International Depository Authority

Information That May Be Late Filed*

  • Verified English translation (if the application was not in English)*
  • Formal copy of the description*
  • Formal drawings*
  • An abstract of the invention*
  • The number of the priority application**
  • If the applicant(s) is not the inventor(s), the inventor's name, address, nationality, whether the inventor was resident in Singapore at the time the invention was made and details of applicant's right to apply for the patent (e.g. by employment or assignment)**
  • For inventions relating to biological material
    • Name of the International Depository Authority**
    • Date the biological material was deposited**
    • Accession number for the deposit**

    *In practice the Patent Office will set a due date for filing these items and this is usually two months

    ** For these items the due date is within 16 Months of Priority Date (if claimed) or Singapore Filing Date (if no priority claimed)
